Search Engine Optimization

What does organic traffic means? Organic traffic is free traffic that your website gets through achieving the best possible ranking in the search engine results. If your website content is listed well (preferably the first page) in the search results for the keywords that you want, you should be able to get visitors. The best position in the search results would be the first, second, third or at the least the first page of the search results. Your chances of getting traffic if listed on the second page of the search results is close to nil.

In order to be listed well, your website content has to be “search engine optimized” which means that the content, link structure, meta data etc have to be configured or set correctly in a way that is favoured by the search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing.

It is also important to realize that if you are promoting a popular product, it is likely that you will compete with hundreds to thousands of others going for the same position. So, you will need to get an edge over your competition at every opportunity and one way is to fine tune or optimize your pages for the search engine. This is not really rocket science but this is something that you need learn.

I have listed the steps that you need to do in order to be listed high up by the search engine. Search engine optimization (SEO) can be complex, but following these simple steps provides a good foundation.

  1. Layout and Design. Although you made an awesome looking website, it does not mean that your website is favoured by the search engine. It is important that the useful contents (or you can say the meat of the website) are placed high in the page instead of half way down the page. Do not bloat your website with large graphics file thus slowing down the loading of the website. The search engines favour pages that load quickly. This is logical since a fast loading website improves the experience of the reader.
  1. Well Placed Keywords. The keywords that you want to list high on the search engine should be placed strategically on the page. For example, if you are selling widgets on your website, it is important that the word widget is in the page, the title, the meta tags and a certain percentage placed appropriately in the content preferably on the first paragraph. On the other hand, you should not repeat the keywords too often or what is commonly termed as “keyword stuffing”. If you do, the search engine will penalize your page.
  1. Text Links and Site Maps. In order to get your website indexed correctly, it important that all your website pages are found by the web spider as it “crawls” your site. It is good to include a site map of your website which shows all the links to your inner pages and have your navigation menu created with text links. This makes it easier for the web spider to follow, identify your pages and index the pages.
  1. Backlinks: Quality over Quantity. One of the criteria that search engines use to decide your page rank is by checking the back links from other sites to your website. If your content is good and has good value, others would link their website to yours. However, this approach was abused by many to get good page rankings. Hence, the search engine now checks whether the source of the back links are from good quality website providing good content; this simply means that if your back link is from a site that is questionable, you may even get a lower page ranking. Moving forward, you should start to take your time to build up your back links but do not overlook quality for quantity.
  1. Get Constantly updated on Search Engine Rulings. Search engine rules changes quite frequently which is why it is important to keep yourself updated regularly. You should subscribe to newsletters and forum updates to make sure that you are informed of any changes.
